Upon returning to Grangehurst proper, Constable Brown informed me that starting once again at the beginning would have to wait.

“There are some matters that I must attend to,” he said, examining the backs of his gloved hands.

“Indeed?” I asked. “Pray tell, what are these matters, if you do not mind my asking?”

The corner of the Constable’s face twitched and a small smile appeared on his face. “Well…it is Rebecca’s birthday today and I am quite certain she will never forgive me if I miss the entire day.”

My heart warmed toward the Constable. “Oh, then you must go,” I said. “She is the youngest, after all, and being so small makes it all the better when Father can be home. You should go. The murder investigation can wait, regardless of what Lord Wilson unreasonably expects.”

The Constable nodded. “I suppose you are right.”

“I can always continue to pursue the investigation discreetly,” I said. “In the meantime, it is far more important that you spend the time with your family. If I manage to find anything, then of course, I shall reach out and let you know at once.”

He nodded. “Very well,” he said. “I shall attend to my family and send a letter for you tomorrow morning if any more information has been discovered. How does that sound?”

“It sounds agreeable, sir,” I said.

He asked the carriage driver to take me back to my own home. It wasn’t until we turned the corner and I saw the shop in the distance that my stomach twisted into knots with dread.

I hope Iris isn’t too unhappy with me still.

I thanked the Constable, though what for, I was not entirely sure, and waved as the carriage disappeared back down the street. My own anger at the conversation I’d had with Iris had long since faded, I realized.

The shop itself stood empty, which surprised me. It was not until I realized it was Monday that I remembered the shop would of course be closed.

“Iris?” I called, removing my shawl and hanging it on the hook just inside the door. “Iris, where are you?”

“Lily, is that you?”

Her voice echoed from up above me. As I moved toward the stairs, I realized the door leading to our upstairs rooms was open.

“Up here!” Iris called.

I heard her laugh, a sound which was echoed by another, much more masculine chuckle.

As I ascended the stairs, I realized the laugh belonged to –

“Captain Seymour?” I asked as I found the man seated on our sofa.

He turned his gaze toward me. “Good afternoon, Miss Lily. How are you doing?”

“I am well, sir, thank you,” I said. I shifted my gaze to Iris, who stood just inside the kitchen.

“I’m making tea, sister,” she said. “Would you care for a cup?”

“Yes,” I said.

A squawk drew my attention back to the Captain. My eyes widened. “Oh, and I see you’ve brought the Admiral along with you.”

Captain Seymour grinned as he reached up to pet the tuft of yellow feathers beneath the parrot’s chin. “I knew that Miss Iris would enjoy seeing him.
